Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee:

I am most pleased to be with you again to discuss recent developments affecting prices and the rate of inflation and the prospects for the months ahead. Since I appeared before you in late February, the rate of inflation has first declined and then risen again. For the three months ended in June, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of increase in the Consumer Price Index was 7.1 percent. The corresponding figure for the three months ending in May was 5.0 percent. Much of the price rise in June was a result of higher prices of meat and petroleum products.
