Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee:

I’m pleased to be here to discuss the Council on Wage and Price Stability and what I see as its role in our continuing fight against inflation… My predecessor, Albert Rees, has already testified about the role of the Council under his direction. We have submitted to the Committee staff a September 8 summary which highlights all the actions taken by the Council since its inception. With your permission I’d like to have that document inserted in the record after my testimony. I believe the variety of issues discussed shows that the Council has been quite active and effective in its monitoring role. It is important to remember that the Council on Wage and Price Stability was established by the Congress as a monitoring agency, not as a control agency, and we must distinguish between the two functions…
