Council Criticism of Coast Guard Proposed Regulations on Construction Design of Oil- Carrying Tankships and Barges

The Council on Wage and Price Stability today criticized the U.S. Coast Guard’s proposed regulations requiring the segregation of oil cargoes from water ballast throughout certain categories of seagoing tankships and barges that carry oil in the domestic United States trade. The Council said that the costs of implementing the proposed changes in ship construction appear to far outweigh their potential benefits, and that the Coast Guard should consider discarding them in favor of more cost-effective techniques of protecting the marine environment …
