Good morning and welcome to the symposium on the steel industry. We view this symposium as a unique attempt by a government agency to sit down with industry representatives, financial analysts and academics in a public forum in order to discuss in depth some critical issues facing a specific major industry. We are here today for a dialogue on and with the steel industry, focusing on these major questions: What are steel’s needs for additional capacity? What are steel’s capital needs and to what extent will government regulations impact on these? What role do and should imports play in the U.S. steel market? How are prices set in the industry? I expect we will have a spirited discussion. Hopefully, there will be as many areas of agreement as disagreement…
