In 1973, the Council on Wage and Price Stability returned to the American taxpayer benefits exactly equal to its costs. I suspect that we are one of the few government agencies that can make this statement categorically. While that record may not be anything to boast about, it should give us pause. Because in 1973, the Council on Wage and Price Stability did not even exist. You may regard that as a flippant observation, but it raises a subject to which too little public attention has been devoted in recent years -the return to the taxpayer on his investment in government …
