Council Questions CPSC’s Proposed Matchbook Standard

The Council on Wage and Price Stability today filed comments
with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on CPSC’s proposed matchbook standard. Under the proposed standard, ordinary (paper) matchbooks would have to be changed from their present form to conform to a variety of newly mandated specifications, including: a) improved quality control, b) having the striking surface on the reverse side (“reverse friction”), c) a flame which self-extinguishes after 15 seconds, and d) having a “latching device” which is designed to inhibit access by children…
