Council Criticizes EPA Proposal to Regulate Ground Waste Proposal

A proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate the underground injection of liquid wastes was criticized today by the Council on Wage and Price Stability. The Council’s comments were contained in a filing before EPA in response to its proposal to implement certain provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act. These provisions require EPA to regulate activities which endanger subsurface waters which serve now or in the future as drinking water supplies for public water systems. While agreeing with the need for such regulation and the basic thrust of the EPA proposal, the Council recommended that EPA pursue more cost-effective methods of reaching the objective of protecting the public against water contamination.
