Council Protests Bus Fare Hike – Seeks ICC Investigation

The Council on Wage and Price Stability today protested a 13 percent increase in bus fares requested by the National Bus Traffic Association, whose members provide almost all of the intercity bus service in the U.S. The Council recommended that the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), which has the proposed fare hike under consideration, “investigate the lawfulness of such rates” and determine the proper balance between the level of bus service and the level of bus fares.

Although the ICC recently allowed an “emergency” six percent bus fare increase to go into effect, the Commission will consider the justification for the full 13 percent increase requested by the bus companies.
