Terminal Areas for Express Shipments by Bus

The Council on Wage and Price Stability today urged the Interstate Commerce Commission to allow bus companies more flexibility in handling express shipments of packages.

Under present procedures packages must be picked up and delivered at bus stations.

What’s more, ICC rules restrict the pick-up and delivery services of bus carriers to city limits, thus hampering the full development of services. On the other hand, general freight carriers are permitted to offer services within the so-called “commercial zone” of a city – – which recently has been expanded by the ICC to encompass a much wider area than that of city limits. The expanded zone in some cases extends 20 miles beyond a city’s limits.
