by Barry Bosworth

Mr. Chairman, my name is Barry Bosworth, I am Director of the Council on Wage and Price Stability in the Executive Office of the President. I have been asked to appear here today to discuss an interim report on lumber prices that the Council prepared at the request of Patricia Harris, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. I would like to stress that this is an interim report and does not purport to be a definitive-study. Nevertheless, the Council has reached a number of conclusions dealing with the causes of soaring lumber prices and prospects for the future. Let me describe briefly the major findings of the report. Then I will be happy to try to answer any questions you might have. From time to time I will be referring to charts and tables that are attached to my prepared testimony.
